Buyoya continues talks with rebel leader

Burundi President Pierre Buyoya was due to continue talks with rebel leader Jean-Bosco Ndayikengurukiye in the Gabonese capital Libreville on Wednesday, news organisations reported. The talks started on Tuesday, attended by DRC President Joseph Kabila - continuing the mediation of his assassinated father Laurent-Desire Kabila - Gabonese President Omar Bongo, and South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma. Kabila left Gabon on Tuesday night, insisting on the withdrawal of Burundian troops from the DRC “because they are plundering our resources”, AFP reported. He said there were no Burundian rebels operating from Congolese territory. The first round of talks between Buyoya and the leader of the rebel Forces de defense pour la democratie (FDD) were described as intense, AFP said. The continuation of the Libreville process comes amid escalating violence in Burundi.
