UN envoy expected in Bujumbura

The UN Secretary-General’s special envoy to the Great Lakes region and chairman of the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC), Ambassador Berhanu Dinka, is expected in Bujumbura on Wednesday, the Burundi news agency Net Press reported on Monday. According to a diplomatic source contacted by IRIN, Dinka’s visit will be partly to create awareness of the IMC to the Burundian population, including its mandate and what it has achieved so far. He will also meet government authorities and the media.

The IMC was established to monitor, supervise and coordinate the implementation of the Arusha agreement. It has 29 members, comprising the 19 signatories to the Burundi peace accord, and representatives of donor countries, the UN, the OAU, regional states and Burundi’s civil society. IMC has decided, among other things, to request the Burundi government to establish (in consultation with IMC) an independent commission to investigate the twin issues of political prisoners and prison conditions in Burundi.
