Kagame in talks with ICTR prosecutor

Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Monday held talks with the prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunals for Rwanda and former Yugoslavia, Carla del Ponte, who is currently visiting his country. According to a statement from presidential spokesman Nicholas Shalita, the discussions focused on ways of improving cooperation between the ICTR and Rwanda, as well as the government’s concerns over the operation of the Tribunal. Del Ponte, speaking over Rwandan radio, said she was very happy with the president’s pledge of continued cooperation with the ICTR. “I am impressed by this positive situation,” she said. According to Reuters news agency, the Rwandan government agreed to hand over to the Tribunal any army officers suspected of committing crimes against humanity during and after the Rwandan Patriotic Front’s (RPF) accession to power in 1994.
