Angolan UNITA rebels mortar shelled the central city of Kuito on Monday evening but no casualties were reported. The Roman Catholic radio station ‘Radio Ecclesia’ announced that a church building was damaged during the attack. The raid on Kuito, the Bie provincial capital, came one day after UNITA rebels attacked a botanical centre in Sailundo, 14 km outside the city. General Jacques Raul, the Angolan army commander in charge of military operations in Kuito, told the official ‘Jornal de Angola’ that the UNITA attack was part of a “low-intensity war in the region.”
