Eight Angolan soldiers who are believed to have been behind a spate of terror raids in Zambia’s western border villages have been arrested and detained, the ‘Post’ newspaper reported on Wednesday. Police spokesman Lemmy Kajoba said they were picked up at Kalabo, “but are being handled by the JMC (the bilateral Joint Military Commission).”
Meanwhile, Zambia has called for “urgent” trilateral talks with Angola and Namibia to discuss Angola’s campaign against UNITA rebels along the Zambian border. Zambian Foreign Minister Keli Walubita met his Angolan counterpart Joao Miranda in Luanda on Tuesday and expressed concern that Angola’s pursuit of UNITA forces had pushed thousands of refugees into Zambia in recent weeks, news reports said.
UNHCR in Lusaka told IRIN on Monday that 657 Angolan refugees fled into northwestern Zambia last week from Moxico province which borders Zambia.
