Chiluba condemns UNITA over renewed fighting

    JOHANNESBURG

    Zambian President Frederick Chiluba has condemned a rebel offensive in Angola which in the last few days has forced more then 600 Angolans to flee into Zambia, the ‘Times of Zambia’ said on Friday.

    The report quoted Chiluba as saying that the Angolan government tried to comply with the 1994 Lusaka Peace Protocol, but the rebel National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) repeatedly abrogated the deal. “This region needs a lot of peace and that is why apart from what is happening in the (Democratic Republic of) Congo, we condemn the push by UNITA in Angola,” Chiluba said.
