The Banque Ouestafricaine de développement (BOAD - West African Development Bank) has lent Niger a total of 8.2 billion CFA francs (US $11.2 million) for five rural development projects, the bank said in a statement on Friday.
The bulk of the money, 7.245 billion CFA francs, will finance the construction of wells, water pumps, irrigation facilities and sanitation infrastructure in the western districts of Tillabery and Tahoua and the southern district of Maradi. It would also allow for improved sanitation and provide more drinking water to poorer neighbourhoods of the capital, Niamey.
The remaining money is to be used for tarring the 84-km road between Gotheye and Mehana, northwest of Niamey, to facilitate trade and promote the development of the agriculturally-rich area.
