Assembly passes controversial bill

    JOHANNESBURG

    Namibia's National Assembly has passed the Police Amendment Bill which will give Police powers to discriminate on health grounds when they recruit personnel, the 'Namibian' reported on Wednesday.

    The Bill, along with a similar piece of legislation on the defence force, has been the subject of controversy, with human rights activists and an opposition party arguing they are designed to keep HIV-positive people out of the security forces. When Speaker of the House Mose Tjitendero asked if there were any objections, the entire House remained silent, the report said.
