An inter-agency delegation mandated by the UN Secretary-General to assess regional problems and needs in West Africa, is now in Senegal, the first stop of its 11-nation tour, a source at the UN coordination office in Dakar told IRIN on Thursday. The mission comprises representatives of 10 UN departments and agencies and the Economic Community of West African States.

The delegation arrived on Tuesday in the capital, Dakar. It has had discussions with various political and civil society leaders and was scheduled to meet President Abdoulaye Wade on Thursday. The mission’s second leg begins on Friday in Nigeria. It will also visit Cote d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Togo.
