At least 23 girls died on Monday when a fire broke out in a secondary school hostel in Plateau State, central Nigeria, media organisations reported. The victims were among 165 girls staying at the hostel, located in the town of Gindiri. They were trapped in their rooms because doors and windows had been locked to prevent them from going out at night, the BBC reported. Several others, including the hostel’s matron, suffered severe burns. Plateau’s government has declared three days of mourning.
