40 arrested in army exercise in Rumonge

The Burundi army on Tuesday arrested more than 40 people in an operation "to control the movement of people" in Rumonge, in the west of the country beside Lake Tanganyika, the Burundi news agency ABP reported on Wednesday.

The operation, organised jointly by the army and local authorities, targeted people in three categories: those not carrying identification, those not known to the local government and people of Congolese origin whose visitors permits had expired, the report said. Administrative officials involved announced that the number of such raids would increase and deplored that some inhabitants of Rumonge had tried to hide people from the security forces, ABP stated.
