Refugees to leave Parrot"s Beak

Refugees still stranded in the Parrot's Beak, southwestern Guinea, could be evacuated in the second half of March, UNHCR reported in a situation update published on Tuesday. It said plans for this were well advanced. Refugees, it said, could be encouraged to walk to Mongo and Koundou Lengo Bengo, some 51 km north of the Beak.

UNHCR said it would truck vulnerable persons but would also consider that option for other categories of refugees. Way stations, manned day and night, and pick-up points could be set up along the evacuation route. Radio Rurale de Guinee has started broadcasting to refugees on the upcoming operation.

A UNHCR workshop to be held next week for local authorities and representatives of the refugees will discuss the minimum conditions needed to ensure safe passage out of the Beak. Discussions are underway to identify two corridors for the evacuations.
