Major opposition parties form alliance

    JOHANNESBURG

    Six Zambian opposition parties plan to form an alliance before general elections later this year, SABC's Channel Africa reported on Tuesday. Opposition leader Dean Mung'omba, who is a former government minister and is now leader of the Zambia Alliance for Progress, was quoted as saying that all the major opposition parties had decided to form a loose alliance "because they have a common cause".

    Mung'omba said they want to update voter registration and were concerned over bids by some groups in the ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy to allow President Frederick Chiluba to stand for another term.
