Liberia's government has reopened the 'Monrovia Guardian', one of four newspapers closed last week for tax evasion, after its owner paid tax arrears of more than 60,000 Liberian dollars, Radio Liberia International reported on Thursday. However, the newspaper has questioned the manner in which the Finance Ministry arrived at the 60,000-dollar figure.
Meanwhile, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) honoured exiled Liberian journalists and rights activists in Ghana at a ceremony on 23 February in Accra. MFWA Executive Director Kwame Karikari said the situation in Liberia was "getting out of hand" and that the event was part of preparations for a campaign to "liberate Liberia", the 'Accra Mail' newspaper reported. It did not elaborate.
