Britain has sent a career diplomat to Conakry as charge d'affairs, because of the crisis in the southwest of the country, the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office reported.
The official, Patrick O'Brien, is the deputy head of mission at the British Embassy in Dakar, Senegal, which also covers Guinea. He arrived in Conakry on Monday for a two-month stay during which he will analyse and report the refugee crisis in the Parrot's Beak area, and maintain close links with Guinean authorities and international organisations.
In recent months, Britain's Department for International Development has given 12 million pounds sterling (US $17.3 million) to humanitarian bodies caring for the refugees.
"Britain is committed to helping bring peace and stability to Sierra Leone and the region. That includes helping Guinea deal with the appalling consequences of the conflict," Brian Wilson, the Foreign Office minister, said.
