Reporters Sans Frontieres (RSF) have called on the Angolan government to
investigate the attack on Isaias Soares, correspondent of Voice of America (VoA) and the independent Catholic radio station 'Radio Ecclesia' in the northern Malange province.
"Those who assaulted Isaias Soares wanted to kill him. The authorities must take all the necessary measures to find those responsible for the attack and bring them to trial," RSF secretary-general Robert Menard said in a letter to the Angolan government.
RSF said on the 22 February Soares was at home in Malange when
two men burst into his house and opened fire at him. Soares' brothers, two policemen, returned fire and the attackers fled. Soares was not injured in the assault. The journalist had recently broadcast reports about crime in the province and neighbours warned him that members of criminal gangs were looking for him. RSF noted that Soares has been harassed on several occasions for his professional activities. In 1999, he was arrested after he denounced the security forces' practices. In 2000, local authorities in Malange forbade
the journalist access to official buildings.
