Ambassador to UN calls for sanctions on rebels

Burundi’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Mark Nteturuye, has called on DRC President Joseph Kabila “to act and have influence on” the armed groups operating from the DRC to stop their violence and killing in Burundi. The Lusaka agreement had provided for disarming these forces, and for demobilisation and reintegration of militias, but these remained to be implemented, Nteturuye said on UN Radio on Thursday. The Bujumbura government hoped that the heads of state meeting in Arusha on Monday would “take all the necessary measures, including sanctions against the FDD and FNL, which are these groups committing these violent acts”, he added.
