Many prisoners expected to receive amnesty

    ABIDJAN

    Ghana's government is to grant amnesty to some prisoners on 6 March - Independence Day - as part of measures to decongest the country's prisons, the 'Daily Graphic' reported. It quoted the minister of the interior, Alhaji Malik Al-Hassan, as saying that so far prison directors had submitted 1,000 names for review. Those released will exclude rapists, murderers and serious offenders, some of whom could see their sentences reduced. The establishment of settlement camps, where inmates would acquire skills, is also being considered as a potential means of decongesting prisons.
