The Commonwealth is to send a fact-finding team to Zimbabwe to investigate reports of human rights abuses, British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook announced on Wednesday. Cook said in a statement that the delegation would report back to the meeting of Commonwealth ministers scheduled to take place in London on 19 March.
He added that recent developments in Zimbabwe were "a cause for alarm" and that the situation there was "deteriorating". "A free media and independent judiciary are fundamental democratic principles," he said. "I believe Britain's concern at the situation in Zimbabwe will be widely shared in the Commonwealth."
