The European Union (EU) has postponed by three months a decision on whether to resume aid to Cote d'Ivoire, suspended about two years ago, saying that it would first evaluate the Ivorian government's commitment to democracy.
The EU made the announcement after a meeting on Friday with Finance Minister Bohoun Bouabre. It said recent developments such as political clashes, numerous arrests and human rights violations were deterrents to the resumption of the aid.
EU aid was suspended after the embezzlement of about US $25 million under the government of deposed President Henri Konan Bedie.
