Annan to send assessment team to West Africa

    ABIDJAN

    UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has decided to send a multi-disciplinary mission to West Africa in March to identify priority needs in the areas of peace and security, regional cooperation, humanitarian affairs and economic and social development.

    Annan announced his decision on Monday at a closed session of the UN Security Council, which was attended by a visiting delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), UN News reported. The mission, which will consult with governments and the ECOWAS Secretariat from 7 to 26 March, is expected to make recommendations on elements of a regional strategy to deal with the crisis.
