The government of Luxembourg, through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has contributed US $500,000 to a decade-long programme to raise education levels among young girls and women in Mali, UNDP said. The money is to be used to help increase female enrolment, train teachers and provide quality education in the northern regions of Gao, Kidal and Timbuktu, where illiteracy rates are among the nation's highest. Mali's literacy rates, according to the 1999 World Development Report, are 28 percent for women and 43 percent for men.
