Government assuming responsibility of IDPs

    JOHANNESBURG

    The Angolan government is assuming greater responsibility for its displaced population of 2.6 million people, diplomatic sources told IRIN. The government plans to assist 500,000 IDPs to reintegrate in 2001, and aims to increase its financial contribution to the displaced to US $74 million, up from US $55 million in 2000. However, the sources said the government would be challenged to make good on its commitments due to institutional weaknesses. They pointed out that the authorities last year were only able to spend US $33 million out of the US $55 million budget.
