Militant youths shut Shell facilities

Militant youths have shut down three major oil facilities of Royal/Dutch Shell near the southern Nigerian oil town of Warri to back demands for jobs and social amenities, oil industry officials told IRIN on Monday.

A Shell spokesperson denied a report by the French news agency, AFP, that some 250,000 barrels per day, or about one-third of the company’s total Nigerian crude oil output, had been shut in by the action. Rather, the spokesperson said that 40,000 barrels per day had been shut.

Shell says it is negotiating with the community leaders to end the takeover.
