Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos has sacked his long-standing army chief of staff General Joao Baptista de Matos in a presidential decree issued on Friday with no explanation, news reports said. Deputy Defence Minister Armando da Cruz Neto replaces De Matos, who had been in charge of the Angolan army since 1992 in its war against UNITA rebels on the home front and in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since 1998.
