Over 400 civilians escape UNITA captivity

    JOHANNESBURG

    Over 400 people, including women, the elderly and children, have fled from areas controlled by Jonas Savimbi’s rebel UNITA movement, PANA reported on Thursday. In all, three groups surrendered themselves to government authorities in Angola’s central Huambo province, according to the report. The largest group of 320 people presented themselves to government officials in Catata locality, 58 in Ngove and 40 in Cuima over the weekend. Meanwhile, three of Savimbi’s soldiers reportedly surrendered to the authorities in Cuima. Reports from Caala said that the local population was in urgent need of food and clothing.
