Post poll violence grips Bikita West

Post-election political violence has gripped the Bikita West constituency, ‘The Daily News’ said on Tuesday. The report said that war veterans and ZANU-PF supporters had targeted mostly teachers whom they accuse of campaigning for the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in the run-up to the by-election, won by ZANU-PF retired Colonel Claudius Makova.

Education officials were quoted as saying that most young teachers have fled their schools while MDC activists have sought refuge in Masvingo. The newspaper said that three teachers from Gumunyu and Gwindingwi schools were tortured by suspected war veterans.

The report added that the latest development had resulted in the displacement of some villagers.

Meanwhile, the officer commanding Masvingo district, chief superintended Davis Chifamba, said no cases of political clashes had been brought to his attention.
