Schools in central Zambia closed to stop cholera

    JOHANNESBURG

    All learning institutions in Kabwe, in Zambia’s Central province have been closed for four weeks in a bid to stop the spread of cholera, the Zambian news agency reported on Monday. The report said that the decision to suspend classes in both the government and private-run primary and secondary schools and colleges followed an emergency cholera meeting addressed by Central Province Deputy Minister Jeston Mulando on Monday. The closure was with immediate effect, but the cholera situation would be reviewed after two weeks, Mulando said. The first cholera case in the region was recorded on 29 December, and the disease has so far claimed nine lives and left 108 people hospitalised. The report added that the spread of cholera has been compounded by a critical shortage of water following the breakdown of water pumps in the area.
