Commercial farmer shot dead

A seventh white farmer was shot dead in Zimbabwe, farm union officials said on Thursday. A statement from the Commercial Farmers’ Union gave no indication of who might have carried out the killing or what the motive might have been, but the farm of Henry Elsworth has had persistent problems with squatters backed by the government’s drive to seize white-owned farms for landless blacks, DPA said. Elsworth, a prominent white farmer and former politician, died on Tuesday at the gate to his cattle ranch near Kwekwe, 200 km west of Harare, and his son, Ian, was also severely injured, the union statement said.
