Government to investigate farm attacks

The South African government is to investigate farm attacks, SABC radio said on Thursday. About 119 people were killed in more than 800 attacks last year. According to the reports, Safety and Security Minister Steve Tshwete has agreed to commission independent research into the motives behind farm attacks. Ministerial spokesman Andre Martin was quoted as saying that the minister had asked the police to advise him on the composition of an independent research team. The panel could include academics and legal experts. The move was welcomed by Agri-South Africa president Japie Grobler, who said such an inquiry could help find ways to curb what he described as the “onslaught on the farming community”.
