Commission investigates prison deaths

A Mozambican parliamentary commission is due to visit northern Cabo Delgado province to investigate the deaths of more than 100 imprisoned opposition demonstrators in the town of Montepuez in November. The commission is chaired by a representative of the RENAMO-Electoral Union opposition coalition, while the rapporteur is a ruling FRELIMO party legislator, the Portuguese new agency Lusa reported.

The inquiry, initially rejected by FRELIMO on a technicality, is to centre on the deaths from suffocation of 119 protestors jailed after violent demonstrations in Montepuez on 9 November. A Mozambican human rights group which carried out its own inquiry blamed the tragedy on both police “negligence” and “retaliation” for the killing of six police officers during the protests.
