Lagos State authorities have carried out the mass burial of over 1,000 people whose relatives were unable to claim the bodies from strike-hit city hospitals and mortuaries, AFP reported officials as saying on Wednesday.
“We buried them yesterday, about 1,200 corpses,” Segun Ayobolu, Lagos State spokesman said. He added that although it was a difficult decision, it had to be made as the corpses were posing a “health hazard.”
Civil servants in Lagos State have been on strike for about two weeks over a minimum wage dispute. Essential services such as water and rubbish collection have been affected as well as hospitals and schools. On Monday, the strike spread to around one-third of the 36 states in the country, AFP reported.
