The Principal of Shamangorwa Combined School in the eastern Kavango village of Mauvara, one of five people attacked on Sunday by suspected Angolan UNITA rebels, died at the Rundu State Hospital on Monday.
Pankratius Kathimo, according to ‘The Namibian’, had sustained serious injuries when the rebels opened fire on the vehicle in which he was travelling. The rebels reportedly also stole 150 head of cattle when they attacked the village, situated near Rundjarara, 65 km east of Rundu.
According to the newspaper, two other villagers were wounded after being shot while sleeping in the same attack. Two soldiers, who went to investigate the shooting, detonated a landmine in the village, one of whom lost a leg in the explosion while the other injured an eye.
