The government in Bangui on Monday announced that it had postponed to next year the introduction of value-added tax (VAT) planned for 1 July. In a statement on state radio, reported by Reuters news agency, it said “the economic situation was not favourable for the introduction of this tax” and that it had postponed it until 1 January 2001. The VAT, which would have replaced a turnover tax on business, is one of the harmonisation measures to be taken up by countries within the Communauté Economique et Monétaire de l’Afrique Centrale (CEMAC) as they move towards a customs union, Reuters reported. CEMAC groups Chad, Cameroon, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Central African Republic.
