Army, police crackdown on post-election violence

Several supporters of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) were injured on Sunday when special police and army units clashed with demonstrators in a Harare suburb while they were celebrating MDC gains in last month’s parliamentary elections.

“What we are doing is discouraging any party from having any demonstrations because of the volatility of the suburbs,” police spokesman Wayne Bvudzijena told ‘The Herald’ newspaper. The official daily said some 30 people had been arrested in post-election violence in the capital, Harare, and the central town of Kwekwe.
Opposition media accused the authorities of launching a campaign of violence against MDC supporters following the elections.
