British Foreign Secretary Robin Cook on Tuesday urged Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe to make a fresh start after ZANU-PF’s narrow victory in the parliamentary elections, news reports said.
“If ZANU-PF is willing to make a fresh start, Britain will be willing to respond,” Cook said. He also praised Zimbabweans for turning out to vote despite government-linked intimidation in the run-up to the elections.
“I admire the dignity and courage of the people of Zimbabwe for turning out to exercise their democratic rights in the face of intimidation,” said Cook. He added: “The strong vote for the opposition shows a very real wish on the part of the people for change.”
