Strike closes schools and hospitals in Lagos

A strike by public sector workers in Lagos State has closed schools, hospitals and left mounds of uncollected refuse on the streets of Lagos, a city of some eight million people, news organisations reported on Monday.

Some senior management staff attended a few patients in one of the main city hospitals while others who could not be discharged were left uncared for, AFP reported a official still working at the hospital as saying.

The strikers, who began their action last week for a substantial rise in minimum wages, have been offered 5,500 naira (US $55) a month by the state. However, the strikers are demanding the federal government minimum of 7,500 naira (US $75).
