Pro-Hutu parties seek leadership of transition period

Seven pro-Hutu parties, known as the G7 group in Arusha, have said the person chosen to lead Burundi's transition period should come from their ranks, news organisations reported. "There is a rumour running around saying that President Pierre Buyoya is the only person who could lead the transition in Burundi," the independent Hirondelle news agency quoted Parti Liberal (PL) leader Gaetan Nikobamye as telling journalists. "That idea is an aberration, and our response is to say no." The G7 is composed of FRODEBU and its allies, PL, PP and RPB, and rebel groups CNDD, FROLINA and PALIPEHUTU. The parties said in a statement that they should lead the transition because of their "widespread representation among the population". They said the current regime was "pretending to compromise" while at the same time "manoeuvring to undermine" the peace process.
