OAU chief appeals for violence-free elections

The Secretary General of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), Salim Ahmed Salim, on Wednesday appealed to Zimbabwe for non-violent elections.

“The secretary-general considers the general elections from 24-25 June, as important and crucial for the peace, security and stability of Zimbabwe, in particular, and the region as a whole,” the OAU said in a statement.

“The secretary-general wishes to lend his voice to the appeals made to all the people of Zimbabwe, particularly the political leaders, to refrain from actions and statements that could result in violence or undermine the credibility of the elections.” The statement said a 20-member OAU observer team was in Zimbabwe to monitor the polls.
