Zimbabwe’s Supreme Court has ordered Zimbabwe’s state-controlled radio and television services to give fair coverage to all political parties in the run-up to parliamentary elections next week, news reports said on Friday.
A ruling handed down Chief Justice Anthony Gubbay told the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation that it had to deliver radio and television services “impartially, without discrimination on the basis of political opinion and without hindering persons in the right to impart and receive ideas and information”.
The independent Media Monitoring Project Zimbabwe said on Thursday that 86 percent of political rallies broadcast on television last week were the ruling party ZANU-PF’s. The official newspapers had also given “blanket coverage” to the ruling party’s campaign.
