US observers will stay

The United States announced on Wednesday that it will keep its election observers in Zimbabwe to watch the country’s parliamentary elections scheduled for later this month, the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reported.

The US, however, expressed concern at the increasing incidents of violence and intimidation aimed at members of the opposition. The US, in addition to US $300,000 it will spend on funding US and local observers, is also funding American monitors from two US-based democracy advocacy programmes and more than 10,000 African observers.
