US gives Cuban doctors refugee status

The United States has granted refugee status to two Cuban doctors who defected in Zimbabwe, a US official was quoted in media reports as saying.

The reports said that the doctors, who have been in a Harare prison, will fly to Nairobi shortly and will reach the US within a week or two.

The doctors, Leonel Cordova Rodriguez, 31, and Noris Pena Martinez, 25, were sent to Zimbabwe in February as part of a group of 107 doctors giving free medical services under a Cuban government programme.
