A total of 13,548 people made homeless by the floods in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza, are still living in government-run accommodation centres, because the local authorities face difficulties in moving them to resettlement areas, the Mozambican news agency 'Agência de Notícias' said on Monday.
Gaza provincial governor Eugenio Numaio told the agency that a shortage of tents was one of the main problems delaying resettlement. He said that efforts were under way with several institutions to obtain more tents to provide provisional accommodation in resettlement areas while people build
their new homes.
He said the demarcation of plots of land for new housing had already started taking place. Numaio said that despite the difficulties experienced he was confident that resettlement was going well. He said that the vast majority of the 248,193 people who were displaced by the floods have already been resettled.
