Six killed in plane crash

    ABIDJAN

    Six passengers died when a commercial plane operated by Ghana's air force crashed on Monday at Accra's Kotoka International Airport, according to news reports.

    The director general of Ghana's Civil Aviation Authority, Andy Mensah, said the plane, a F-27 turboprop flown by the domestic carrier, Airlink 2000, was carrying 52 passengers and crew. The surviving 46 people are being treated at city hospitals.

    The plane was on an internal flight from Tamale, 420 km north of the capital, and crashed on landing in torrential rain. PANA, citing the Ghana News Agency, reported that heavy rain had forced the pilot of the Dutch-built aircraft to abandon attempts to land in Lome, Togo, and Takoradi, Ghana.

    AFP reported on Monday that all Fokker 27s in Airlink's fleet had been grounded. Due to a shortage of planes, the state-owned Ghana Airways has for years ceded domestic flights to the air force.
