Kano to implement Sharia

The Kano State government says while it will not rush into implementing Islamic law, it is determined to see it through within the bounds of the 1999 constitution, 'The Guardian' reported.

Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso told reporters that the state administration was working jointly with the Sharia Implementation Committee and the house of assembly on the issue.

A Sharia Bill signed by the state government will, if passed, outlaw prostitution, gambling and alcohol.

Another state, Yobe, has announced plans to implement Sharia despite an appeal by the federal government to hold off its introduction. A similar announcement by Kaduna State in February ignited sectarian riots in the city of Kaduna in which hundreds died.
