Accusations continue

The Eritrean government claimed in a statement released on Friday that Ethiopian MiG fighter planes had bombed across its newly established southern defensive lines in Debasima, 57 kilometres from the Red Sea port of Assab, targetting the city water depot on Thursday. Journalists and diplomats who observed the Eritrean withdrawal from Bure, near Assab, last Tuesday were told by Eritrean commanders that small units of Ethiopian
troops had moved into the newly abandoned territory, and that Ethiopian planes were carrying out aerial surveys. Ethiopian troops were able to occupy over 40 km of fortified stonewall trenches built over the last two years by the Eritreans, on the exposed lava-rock desert plateau.
