Mugabe backs Masire in Congo dialogue

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe on Thursday expressed his support for the OAU-appointed mediator in the Congo conflict, former Botswana president Ketumile Masire. Zimbabwean presidential spokesman George Charamba told a news conference after a meeting between Masire and Mugabe that the discussions centred on a preparatory meeting of the inter-Congolese dialogue. Masire has called the meeting for Cotonou,
Benin, from 6 to 7 June.

Diplomatic sources told IRIN that Masire's meeting with Mugabe was aimed at soliciting support to convince DRC President Laurent-Desire Kabila to send a delegation to the Benin meeting, which has been boycotted by his government. Zimbabwe's troops back the Congolese government against rebels backed by Uganda and Rwanda.
