Prosecutor seeks life sentence for former mayor

A Swiss prosecutor on Thursday asked a military appeals court in Geneva to sentence Rwandan genocide suspect Fulgence Niyonteze to life in prison, news agencies reported. A court in Lausanne, Switzerland, found Niyonteze guilty of war crimes in April. The former mayor of Mushubati sought asylum in Switzerland in October 1994. The prosecutor said Niyonteze was “deeply implicated” in the 1994 genocide, AFP reported. Niyonteze’s lawyers called for his acquittal, contesting the validity of the witnesses, it said. The five military judges were due to deliver their judgement on Friday.
