Meanwhile, a defence lawyer for genocide suspect Ignace Bagilishema on Thursday asked the ICTR in Arusha, Tanzania, to order three soldiers who served in the UN Assistance Mission to Rwanda (UNAMIR) to appear as defence witnesses, the Arusha-based Internews agency reported. In particular, the defence is interested in proving that contrary to the impression created by some prosecution witnesses, Bagilishema, a former mayor of Mabanza commune in western Rwanda, did make efforts to increase the security of Tutsis in his commune during the 1994 genocide. The lawyer said the three UNAMIR soldiers had attended security meetings at the prefecture office and could present “information in mitigation” of his client, Internews reported.
