An inter-ministerial committee and the state petroleum company, NNPC, have proposed a 25.5-billion naira (US $249.3 million) package for reforesting the country in four years, ‘The Guardian’ of Lagos reported on Friday.
The programme consists of community-based afforestation and forest conservation projects, environmental education, the replacing of wood fuel with other energy forms, an increase in biotechnology research and the mass propagation of improved seeds.
The committee - set up on 1 April to develop a community-driven “aggressive afforestation and conservation programme” - aims to spend 6.6 million naira (US$ 58,651) on the plan this year.
The federal government is to contribute 60 percent of the cost of implementing the overall plan, state governments 25 percent and local governments 10 percent. The remaining 5 percent will come from other interested partners.
